A Weekend in Luxembourg

A Weekend in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is the world’s only Grand Duchy, flooded with UNESCO heritage sites, where the birds chirp louder, the grass in greener, and the transportation is free.

Since I am living near Frankfurt, my husband (Andrew) and I decided it was time to stop delaying the 6 hour train journey and just go to Luxembourg for the weekend. I don’t regret a single thing. In fact, it tops my list of most underrated places in Europe! Riding the train from Frankfurt to Luxembourg was not only beautiful, but also a great way to see the iconic towns along the Rhine River.

I wasn’t sure what Luxembourg would feel like. Belgium? Germany? The Netherlands? Or completely different? I can only speak for Luxembourg city, but it felt like I was in France. Locals spoke French, street signs were in French, there was clearly a French influence!

Luxembourg’s city parks are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Like previously stated, the chirping birds were so loud, it felt like a recording. The grass was so green and lush that it made me question if it was fake. And yes, the city transportation was free, so exploring was so easy.

Our Weekend in Luxembourg:

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Luxembourg City; Explore Ville Haute; Walk to Grund; Scott’s Pub; Casemates du Bock; Visit the Municipal Park; Ennert de Steiler
  2. Day 2: Coffee at Golden Bean Coffee Experience; Walk in the Parcs de la Pétrusse; Walk across the Pont Adolphe Bridge to Gare; Explore Gare

We only were able to see Luxembourg’s capitol city, so we didn’t have time to explore the nature outside of the city. If I had another day, I would have gone on hikes that take you to waterfalls. (The birds are probably chirping even louder there.)

Day 1: Arrive in Luxembourg City; Explore Ville Haute; Walk to Grund; Scott’s Pub; Casemates du Bock; Visit the Municipal Park; Ennert de Steiler

Taking it back to before the arrival, is the beautiful train ride into Luxembourg. If you are coming from the Frankfurt area in Germany, you will probably ride along the Rhine River. This is such a beautiful route!

Once in Luxembourg, we took advantage of the FREE transportation! We took a tram from the train station in Gare to our hotel which was near Ville Haute. The trams were colorful and guilt free! The Hamilius stop was popular to arrive to the action of Ville Haute.

There is an abundance of beautiful streets ready to be explored. We stumbled upon a viewpoint called the “Great View Point” behind the Cite Judiciaire.

From here, there is an elevator that takes you down to the Alzette River and to the lowest “level” of Luxembourg!

the bridge seen in this picture is where the next photos were taken!

Once you cross the Alzette River, you enter the Grund quarter. This was one of my favorite areas, as you feel so small between the steep cliffs, lined with the fortified medieval old town.

Andrew and I stopped for lunch and beers at Scott’s Irish Pub not only because we were here on St. Patrick’s Day, but also for the amazing patio views! It is situated in the absolute best location for a mid day beer.

You can pay to go inside, not only to explore the seemingly endless underground tunnels, but also discover why it was built in the 17th century. Find tickets and more information here. We opted to just explore the free areas outside since we were short on time, but from what I read, this is truly a unique and interesting piece of European history.

Casemates was an important fortress that thankfully survived when Luxembourg gained its independence, as destroying Casemates would destroy a lot of the city. Looking around Luxembourg, it will become clear how much of the city was built and used for military purposes. (P.S. – Luxembourg translates to “Little Fortress.”)

This bridge is a great photo spot!

The sun was starting to set, so we decided to see the Edouard Andre Municipal Park before it became dark outside. There is something so special about Luxembourg’s parks!

We decided to stop here for drinks because we saw there was an open seat on the outdoor balcony. We ordered pizza and craft beer. I can only imagine how beautiful the view of Casemate du Bock is during the day time!

Day 2: Coffee at Golden Bean Coffee Experience; Walk in the Parcs de la Pétrusse; Walk across the Pont Adolphe Bridge to Gare; Explore Gare

2 flat white coffees, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a red velvet muffin. Perfect!

I found Luxembourg to be so special because of its many “levels.” To walk from the main street to the river, you will walk down many stairs, all with beautiful views. There is a reward at the bottom, the blue/green colored river! Since it was a beautiful day, there were numerous people running, walking their dogs, and taking leisurely walks. Andrew and I walked with our coffees and red velvet muffin from Golden Bean.

This bridge will connect you to another quarter named Gare. This houses the main train station! We had a lot of fun crossing this bridge because of the views! We couldn’t believe how nice this walking and biking underpass was, so I recommend taking the walk even if you just turn around and head back to Ville Haute.
