This small town right outside of Frankfurt, Germany is a half-timbered dream. Known for their “Witches Castle” and for burning witches at the stake in 1676, you don’t want to pass up the opportunity to experience this eerie town the next time you’re in Frankfurt.
You will want to visit Idstein’s Old Town (Altstadt) for the stunning German buildings. König-Adolf–Platz is their central square. Here, you can indulge in coffee, sweets, shopping, and eye candy (the buildings).
It is not just a medieval time capsule – it is a lively town where people live and work, too! The town itself is quite small, so I wouldn’t go too far out of your way to go to Idstein. But if you have an extra day in the Frankfurt area, then I totally recommend. If you are using public transport to arrive, take the train to Idstein (Taunus) station, which is about a 10-15 minute walk to the Old Town. If you are driving, there are multiple parking garages nearby the Old Town. Their visitor center is in the main square for more information, too!
My husband and I spent about 4 hours in Idstein walking around, taking pictures, and eating & drinking at Idsteiner Brauhaus.
Here are some pictures of Idstein that will persuade you to visit this one of a kind town:

Pictured below is our lunch at Idsteiner Brauhaus! We ordered their Winter Special Beer, which highlights pearl hopps. Delicious! For food we ordered a pretzel pizza and schnitzel.
